This was the first time that a Lounge at an Indian airport hosted a food festival for international passengers. Several other distinctive themes are on the anvil to present a panorama of Indian Food and Beverage to global guests passing through T2, CSIA.
Much to their delight, guests were welcomed at the entrance by beautifully clad hostesses in the traditional Maharashtrian sari and nose ring. On entering, passengers were at once initiated into the spirit of Mumbai with a combination of motifs, starting from the collage at the entrance to the uniform of the staff and extending to the signage for Food and Beverage.
The photo booth attracted several international guests, giving them an opportunity to don local turbans and caps traditionally worn by various local communities residing in Mumbai. The local fortune teller or palmist offered passengers a sneak peek into the future from 4pm to midnight, in true ‘BambaiIsstyle;’ while various small nuances that passengers may have missed about Mumbai and its local homes were present at the Lounge. The Business Class Lounge exhibited a stand with totems such as ‘torans’ (mobiles hung above doors in Indian homes), jasmine garlands, lemon and chillies at the entrance (believed to ward off evil), and many other items used in Maharashtrian homes.
The Mumbai-themed food fest at T2 featured several city staples, including tea on cycle and popular street food items. But, the biggest surprise element for international guests, which is a novelty they couldn’t have got anywhere else, was the flavours of Mumbai being served in miniature replicas of the famed ‘dabbas’ (steel tiffin carrier), on the gold-themed centre tables between the luxuriously cushioned leather sofas, containing guests’ choice or order of Indian / local food.
